We develop easy-to-understand visual guides to help users absorb information quickly and directly. These comprise a series of images that are split into individual action steps. Meaningful graphics can replace entire text sections, which results in a significant reduction in translation costs. However, it is usually not possible to do away with text completely. In practice, text headings and a short description under each image have proven to be effective.
Digital manuals offer the option of integrating video content. 3D animations and instructional videos often illustrate complex procedures far better than descriptions with words or graphics. We recommend communicating on as many channels as possible to reach different user groups.
Many problems that occur in instruction manuals cannot be foreseen, even by experienced technical authors. It is therefore worth testing certain instruction manual sequences with several test subjects. Mobile eye-tracking glasses also make it possible to carry out usability tests in a realistic working environment. With careful preparation, just three to five test subjects are able to reveal up to 80% of the weak points in an instruction manual.
